Weapon Guide Updated Version 2.0

This guide is my personal opinion on which weapons to use based on how I personally play each class. There was plenty of discussion in the previous topic as to which weapons we all felt were the most beneficial to each class, so I will do my best to include every weapon that was mentioned. Please note that this guide is to be used as simply that a guide and the best methods are truly trial and error. I would highly recommend saving before you do any weapon upgrades.

I will include which items are required to best maximize your leveling abilities on your weapons, as well as which Catalyst is required to transform your item to the next level of weapon.

It is important to note that most initial forms of weapons can be found as treasure or bought from shops but I will include where to find each item that I have listed in my guide. The previous version of this guide has weapons from three categories Strength, Magic, and one that had both. I've decided to forgo this method and simply include the weapons that were discussed as a group from the last topic..

1. Upgrading Basics

Upgrading can only be performed at a save station, once you've completed Chapter 4 and have received the Omni-kit Key Item. While you can start upgrading at any point, it is recommended that you not start until later in the game as upgrading requires LOTS of resources to be efficient. Most people will recommend that you start in Chapter 11. This is simply because this is the first chapter in which you are able to run off and perform side quests, or farm efficiently. If you have the Gil, and you feel you can upgrade efficiently, then by all means start whenever.

purchased for 15,000gil from Plautus's Workshop.
What I have found to be the most efficient way of upgrading is to keep certain drops and sell everything else for Gil, which can then be used to buy more components.

In order in upgrade efficiently it is first recommended that you use 36x Sturdy Bones, Barbed Tails or Vibrant Ooze at a cost of 80 Gil a piece (or 2880 for all 36) which will give you a multiplier of x3. All three of these items can be purchased from Creature Comforts.

From there you can then use certain items which have been identified as giving the best exp/gil ratio.

    1.Ultracompact Reactor 40,000exp buy for 50,000gil from R&D Depot
    2.Particle Accelerator 4,800exp buy for 10,000gil from R&D Depot
    3.Superconductor 400exp buy for 840 from Lenora's Garage
    4.Perfect Conductor 751exp buy for 1,600gil from Lenora's Garage

As a general rule, upgrading from a basic weapon requires 50,000exp, upgrading an intermediate weapon requires 450,000 exp, while upgrading an advanced weapon requires 1,500,000exp. This is quite expensive, especially considering the price of some of the Catalysts required to evolve the weapons. Read near the end of the guide for a quick trick I picked up on how to make the most of those expensive catalysts.

NOTE: Like I said in the first page, this is simply a rough number. Some basic weapons may only need 25,000, while others may need up-to 60,000. For best results, save the game before you perform and upgrades. Trial and Error is your friend here.

REGARDING WEAPONS: PLEASE NOTE THAT I WILL PUT THREE STARS (***) NEXT TO THE WEAPON THAT I AM PERSONALLY RECOMMENDING.

    2. Lightning's Weapons

In the previous guide, there was tons of discussion over which weapons we thought we best suited for Lightning. After looking over all 19 pages, I've chosen three which I felt best encompasses the forums thoughts.

    Gladius

Gladius > Helter-skelter - > Omega Weapon. This will finish with 723 Strength and 210 Magic.

Gladius has 26 levels, and is turned into the Helter-skelter by using a Uraninite which can be purchased from The Motherlode for 45,000gil. Helter-skelter has 61 leves and is turned into the Omega Weapon by using a Trapezohedron which can be purchased from R&D Depot for 2,000,000gil. The Omega Weapon has 100 levels.

Gladius can be found in Ch. 2 or can be purchased for 7,100 from Up In Arms.

    Lionheart ***

Lionheart - > Ultima Weapon - > Omega Weapon. This will finish with 508 Strength and 508 Magic.

Lionheart has 21 levels and is turned into the Ultima Weapon using a Scarletite which can be purchased for 100,000gil from The Motherlode. Ultima Weapon has 41 levels and is turned into the Omega Weapon using a Trapezohedron which is purchased from R&D Depot for 2,000,000gil. The Omega Weapon has 100 levels.

Lionheart can be found in Ch. 12 and can be purchased for 28,000 from Plautus's Workshop

    Axisblade
Axisblade - > Enkindler - > Omega Weapon. This will finish with 315 Magic and 315 Strength.

Axisblade has 21 levels and is turned into Enkindler by using a Adamantite which can be purchased for 220,000gil from R&D Depot. Enkindler has 41 levels and is turned into the Omega Weapon by using a Trapezohedron which is purchased from R& D Depot for 2,000,000gil.

    6.Vanille's Weapons

Three weapons came up for Vanille. The weapon you choose for her will greatly depend on the role you mainly see her using. My reccomendation for Vanille is to use the Healer's Staff, but that is simply because I mainly use her as a Medic. You may find one of the other weapons more beneficial depending on how you play her.

    8. Short on Traezohedrons? Look no further!

You will need at least 6 Trapezohedrons to make an ultimate weapon for each character. At a cost of 12,000,000gil this is quite the task! Especially considering it will take another ~1,500,000gil to level it up.

What you have to do is front the bill and buy one Trapezohedron. From there, you must save up enough to be able to make either Kain's Lance (made from Dragoon Lance, Shamanic Spear, Punisher, Pandoran Spear or Gae Bolg) or Nirvana (made from Tigerclaw, Healer's Staff, Belladonna Wand or Mistilteinn).

Once it is at it's highest level, you have to dismantle it. This will net you THREE Trapezohedrons. While you won't make any money for selling them, you will save yourself 4,000,000 on ones that you would have to buy. You will also receive 36 Moonblossom Seeds which can be sold for 216,000gil.

    9. FAQ

Do you need to go to the max level in order for the weapon to change form?

Yes, exactly. For example, Gladius has 26 levels and once it has reached its maximum level a star will appear next to the name. It's a that point you would use the correct Catalyst (in this case a Uraninite purchased for 45,000gil from The Motherlode) which will transform it into Helter-Skelter.

How do you unlock R&D Depot?

Unlocking the Side Quest "Hunt Missions" opens up a huge group of side quests. You will get access to R&D Depot from completing "Mission #7 - Bituitus, The Pillager. This is a particularly tough mission in comparison to any of the previous ones you would have completed and you may need to come back after you've finished the game to complete it; that or come back with a VERY strong party.

I can only afford so much - which weapons would I upgrade first?

This can only really be answered by an opinion, but feel free to disagree/agree/leave your input. Personally, my end-game party for the most part revolved around Light, Fang and Hope. Personally, I would work on upgrading these three weapons first, based on the below recommendations for weapons. Obviously, if you party consists of different members, just adjust accordingly.

I'm currently in chapter [insert here]. I have not upgraded any weapons for anyone yet. I was wondering when I should start upgrading my characters' weapons?

The general consensus is to start in Chapter 11 if you can afford it, if not wait until end game. Like I said at the start of the guide, you can start any time but it is most efficient once you have some Gil saved up.

Are you making an accessory version of this?

Probably not, no. I don't think I've ever had more than one accessory on a character for more than a few battles. Making a guide that recommends only a few accessories for each character would be a waste.

    What is stagger lock?

When the stagger gauge of a monster is full and it's hit by any character, the monster will go staggered, UNLESS that character has stagger lock. This means that when the stagger gauge of a monster is full and it's hit by any character with a stagger lock weapon, the monster will not go staggered. The character will still contribute to building up the stagger gauge but can not actually stagger it.
